My Gourmet Cats
The other day I was browsing the internet, and, undoubtedly because my browser has collected my online cat food shopping characteristics, I was exposed to an advertisement for cat food. It showed one of those incredibly white happy cats which was licking its chops and sitting next to a heap of vague food bits and it had the following text: "People food for cats!"
What the fuck?!
This started me thinking. What kind of food do we generally give our cats and why would anyone want that to be people food? I would think cat food would be better for cats. But maybe there is a flaw in my logic somewhere...
I have been feeding my cats pretty much the same type of food since I found a brand that both my cats would eat, and even eat well after I had starved them for a bit during the day. I have noticed during the years that the sauce is the most favourite part, followed by bits of meat and fish and followed at the very last place by vegetables or grains. Yet the packets and tins in the supermarket often advertise with shiny carrots and peas. So I suppose this is to make the food look tastier to the pet owners who are buying the food. I have been washing up too many limp bits of leftover carrots to believe that my cats like them. My cats are not impressed by shiny packets with fancy words, not even for "double the surprise" or "healthy omega 3".
I think I am not alone in thinking that cats "just" need to eat moist meat or fish, drink some water and, if they can go outside, munch some grass. Yet there is such an enormous market (go and look online for even more options) for cat food that "tickles the senses and palate" or provides "delectable meals". This food sounds more exclusive than most ready made meals that are sold in the supermarkets to actual people!
